The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum has many different volunteer opportunities. If you’d like to be part of an organization that values community, and educating the public about our past and future in fun and creative ways, we’d love to have you as one of our volunteers.
2023 Volunteer Opportunities:
Historic Downtown Jackson Walking Tour Guide
Love Jackson Hole? Interested in history? Enjoy sharing this place with visitors? Join the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum as a volunteer guide for our historic downtown walking tours!
From May – September 2023, the JHHSM is offering historic downtown walking tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 10:30am. We are currently seeking two or more volunteers to help with Thursday and Friday tours. Walking tours are offered on a first-come first-served basis, include up to 12 participants, start at our museum at 225 N. Cache, and last approximately 1 hour. Tour guides walk with the group from the museum to the town square, then around the square and surrounding blocks to share general Jackson Hole history as well as specific stories about historic buildings that still remain today. Tour guides carry an Ipad or binder provided by JHHSM to share historic photographs and maps along the way. This is a great way to interact with our Jackson Hole visitors, learn more about history, and share one of the many important aspects that makes Jackson so unique.
Training will be provided through a binder of resources, one-on-one sessions, and by shadowing other tour guides.

Internships
The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum offers internships for high school students, and college students who have selected history, public history, museum administration, or a related field, as their major course of study. This is primarily a summer opportunity, but months and dates can be flexible. Typical learning opportunities include: accessioning collections, implementing educational programs for youth and adults, giving tours, interpreting historic sites, developing programs and exhibits, as well as creating written material for public distribution.
Historic Preservation Plaques and Awards
The Teton County Historic Preservation Board began its plaque program in 2012 to help identify and honor the many historic buildings scattered throughout Jackson Hole. These properties tell the story of our community’s history and the plaques are simple markers that help share these stories. Every two years, the TCHPB and JHHSM accept nominations for plaque properties and considers each based on the following criteria: High Visibility, Integrity of original structure, and Historical Significance.
The Jesse O’Connor Preservation Award recognizes and celebrates the efforts and accomplishments of individuals, families, and organizations that have made significant contributions to preserving the historic resources in Teton County. These selected preservationists have undertaken rehabilitation projects, research and written about Jackson Hole history, or advocated for the preservation of our cultural resources.
